How To: Getting dnnNAV to output an unordered list menu

For those new guys working with DNN and trying to have the default DNN menu play nice, I have compiled a number of references that help you get going. dnnNAV is a very powerful menu.

The author of the menu code (Jon Henning) provided us with a nice video tutorial on the CSS characteristics of the dnnNAV menu. A must see. Second you need to add the following code to the menu:

At the top of your (.ascx) skin:

<%@ Register TagPrefix="dnn" Namespace="DotNetNuke.UI.Skins" Assembly="DotNetNuke" %>

Of course you can supply other properties as well. Note: you can’t use the CustomAttributes in a HTML skin.

You can find a sample skin on codeplex. This skin does not have the UL feature.

DotNetNuke acquires Snowcovered: our take on this deal

Today, DNN Corp. announced the acquisition of Snowcovered. A surprising move, being a very logical one.

Since we started with DotNetNuke, we have been buying and selling modules and skins on Snowcovered. We were happy we could, not only because we made a healthy profit from selling modules, but more importantly because it allowed us to extent our DNN capabilities.

The modules and skins bought though Snowcovered extended our toolbox in such a way that we could successfully compete against non-DNN solutions. Moreover, having such a convenient shop for DNN extensions not only improved the findability of the available extensions, but for sure promoted the development of new extensions.

DNN Corp. started its marketplace early 2007 and until today it has not been very successful. Compared to Snowcovered, user experience of the DNN Marketplace was not optimal, and some important features and benefits (e.g. vendors discounts, PayPal payments) were not there. Improving the Marketplace did not happen, one of the main reasons for lack of success, IMHO.

So what can we learn from this?

First mover advantage extremely important.
Even if you have an excellent opportunity to compete against a first mover (like DNN Corp. had), you have to do your homework and have to offer a value proposition that is better than the first mover.

When the DNN Marketplace started, we were hoping that this competition would also improve the services of Snowcovered. Although Snowcovered was already pretty good, there was (and is) still a lot to be desired, amongst others:

Better customer support (for buyers). You are basically on your own when a vendor does not perform.
Cheaper (for vendors), a 25% gross fee seems steep, especially for high volume products / vendors.
An easier product listing process and support for license management.
More options for mediation in case of buyer - vendor conflicts.
etc.

So were does that leave us, after the acquisition of Snowcovered by DNN Corp?

For sure this acquisition will help grow the DNN community, because prospective users will immediately see a vibrant and trustworthy commercial ecosystem. However, as DNN service provider and Snowcovered power user, we also hope that DNN Corp. will improve upon the current 'weaknesses' of the Snowcovered platform.

Windows Live Writer 2009 beschikbaar

De nieuwste versie van Windows Live Writer is uit. Windows Live Writer is een prachtige tool voor het schrijven van weblog bijdragen en het onderhouden van web content.

De Blog module van DotNetNuke werkt er standaard mee. Live Writer kan je ook koppelen met een HTML module of met Ventrian’s News Articles module, maar dan heb je wel weer een meta API plugin nodig (digMeta of metaPost, deze zijn te koop op snowcovered).

Live Writer zorgt ervoor dat je off-line content kan schrijven, die je daarna met één druk op de knop op je website kan publiceren. Dit maakt het schrijven voor je site leuk maar vooral gemakkelijk!

Een van de highlights van de Live Writer is het invoegen van foto’s. Je kan foto’s eenvoudig resizen en op een mooie manier rangschikken.

Live Writer is onderdeel van een Windows Live, het online platform van Microsoft. Windows Live biedt van alles voor je online leven: o.a. chatting, fotoalbums, online office en opslag. Check it out!

DotNetNuke and Umbraco

Tom's blog (Seablick Consulting) entry motivated me to finally install Umbraco (it lingered on a toDo list for some time now). After the usual issues you get when installing some app for the first time (e.g. it wouldn't install as a application below localhost) I played with it for a few hours.

My bottomline question was: Is umbraco significantly better than DotNetNuke? Translated in business terms: Can I run a more profitable business when I use Umbraco instead of DotNetNuke?

The short answer is: No. Or at least I did not find those features that would make me shift. For sure Umbraco has some features DNN doesn't have (yet):

E.g. easy asset management, easier than the DNN file manager (but is it as powerful)?
Content versioning much more integrated.
It will probably have a lot of 'modules/extensions', and it can be skinned quite well.

But these are not the points that make me move to a new platform.

Up to this point I can tune DotNetNuke in just about any way I want (without changing the core) and I can pretty accurately estimate what the time investment of the requirements of my clients will be. These are things are pretty important for my business.

Moreover, given my investment in DotNetNuke, the friends and colleagues in the community I came to know over the last 4 years, and the way DNN is progressing with the 5.x platform. There is really no reason for me to move.That being said, your mileage may vary ;)

SDN Event in Driebergen

Op 30 maart 2009, was er weer een SDN Event. Het evement vond plaats in congrescentrum De Bergse Bossen in Driebergen. SDE events vinden 2 à 3 keer per jaar plaats en zijn met name gericht op software development professionals.

Nieuwe DotNetNuke module voor communities (a.k.a. clubs, verenigingen en groepen)

Bij interApps zitten we graag boven op het DotNetNuke nieuws. Niet alleen helpen we zelf graag mee aan de ontwikkeling van DotNetNuke; we test ook graag de producten van collega DotNetNuke ontwikkelaars (niet dat we daar altijd even blij van worden overigens…) Active Modules is bezig met de ontwikkeling van community module a la Hyves. Active Social gaat hij heten. Het is een module voor een soort van 'prive' Hyves, met alle toeters en bellen die daar bijhoren.

U kan dus binnen uw eigen DotNetNuke omgeving een eigen community beginnen! Waarom zou u dat willen? Er zijn wel een aantal redenen te bedenken:

Controle over de informatie / 'look en feel'
Content eigendom
Eigen advertising
Prive houden van de community
…

Voor wie? Scholen, verenigingen en clubs, intranet voor bedrijven, klantportalen, community rond een tijdschrift / thema, enz. Wij zien er wel wat in.

Nieuwsartikelen module

Zolang wij met DotNetNuke werken, maken we op veel - van de door ons ontwikkelde - websites gebruik van de 'News Articles' module van Ventrian. Deze module is veelzijdig in het gebruik en maakt het mogelijk content op verschillende manieren op een DotNetNuke website weer te geven.

Meestal plaatst men de hoofdmodule op de pagina 'nieuws' en de sateliet modules op andere pagina's. Op deze website hebben we de module gebruikt voor onze referenties. Op de homepage hebben we op basis hiervan, een lijstje met referenties getoond. Als we een rerferentie toevoegen, verandert de lijst op de homepage automatisch mee.

Cleaning module data after portal deletion

Yesterday I spent the better part of the day deleting portals from a larger DNN installation, for the purpose of creating a smaller copy of the same installation with a subset of portals. This post is meant to be a note to self to look into multi portal deletion sometime, and to remind me of a script that needs to run to clear out data for a few specific modules...
